Los Gigantes: cliffs and boat trips

The Los Gigantes cliffs — walls of basalt up to 600 m dropping sheer into the Atlantic — are one of Tenerife's great spectacles. The best way to see them is from the sea, and pilot whales and dolphins appear along the way. Here's how.

Updated 23 August 2026

In south-west Tenerife, the fishing town of Los Gigantes looks out over the colossal cliffs that give the place its name. They're impressive from land; from the water, with the whole wall towering above you, they're unforgettable. And this area is rich in cetaceans, so the trip is two spectacles in one.

Catamaran with cetaceans

Catamaran trips combine the cliffs with watching pilot whales and dolphins, resident year-round in this channel. They usually include a swimming and snorkelling stop at the foot of the wall.

Sailing to the caves

To see them at a slower pace, a sailing boat approaches the caves and hidden coves at the foot of the cliffs. Sailing in silence makes the scale of the wall feel even greater.

Tip: leave in the morning, when the sea is calmer and the light hits the west-facing wall. Bring sunscreen and a layer for the wind on the way back; many trips leave from Los Gigantes harbour or Puerto Colón.

Catamaran or sailing boat, seeing Los Gigantes from the water is one of those things that justify the trip. Book ahead in high season, as trips fill up.
